The Longest Nite (Hong Kong) 1998
While a gang war is developing in Macao between two heads of Triads, corrupt cop Sam (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) takes on a gunman in a restaurant where bald Tony (Lau Ching-Wan) is eating. After Sam goes to another mobster’s restaurant where an informant is tortured, he finds a headless corpse in his apartment. Then a nightclub owner is murdered, and Sam moves fast to find the killer in an effort to prevent the gang war from escalating. However, he gets a full dose of action after he pins the crime on Tony.

With WWII underway, Wong has been left behind by her father, who has escaped to England. As a freshman at university, she meets fellow student Kuang Yu Min. Kuang has started a drama society to shore up patriotism. As the theater troupe’s new leading lady, Wong realizes that she has found her calling, able to move and inspire audiences and Kuang. He convenes a core group of students to carry out a radical and ambitious plan to assassinate a top Japanese collaborator, Mr. Yee. Each student has a part to play; Wong will be Mrs. Mak, who will gain Yees’ trust by befriending his wife and then draw the man into an affair. Tenshu is imprisoned and sentenced to death for murdering the men who raped his girlfriend. However, he manages to survive his execution and is presented with an option: face another execution attempt or subject himself to their bizarre and dangerous experiments. He choses the latter and is put in a cell with a rapist and a woman who’s infected with a taint that transports from person to person during extreme anger. The taint is transferred to Tenshu and he must now deal with the military who has interrupted the experiment to obtain it

I found this movie to be very well-paced. The premise is quite imaginative, and as a viewer I was pulled along as the
characters developed. The pacing is done very well for those that like to think–enough is kept hidden from the viewer
early on, and questions keep arising which are later answered, producing a well-thought out and very satisfying film,
both cerebrally and from an action standpoint.
It seems some people were looking for a non-stop roller-coaster ride with this film–one of those that comes charging out
of the gate. This would be more analogous to one of those coasters that first takes you slowly up the hill–creating a
wonderful sense of anticipation–and is ultimately, in my mind, more fulfilling for the foundation initially laid.
