Synopsis / Plot
Combining yakuza, science fiction, and vampire elements may sound like an outlandish recipe for campy excess in the United States, but former pinku eiga director Takahisa Zeze plays things remarkably straight in this truly unique effort from Japan. In the near future, a group of desolate citizens spend their days and nights in Mallepa, a large refugee community located in the “Asian Special Economic Zone.” Though brothers Sho and Shinji survive on the streets with a little resourcefulness and the help of friend Toshi, an encounter with wounded vampire Kei forever changes the course of their lives. Soon after taking Kei back to their hideout so that the desperate vampire may recover, an angry gangster shows up to reclaim a stolen briefcase full of cash. Although Kei is quick to make dinner out of the angry gangster, his efforts to keep his trio of friends from harm is too little too late when the determined gangster fires a fatal bullet into Shinji. When Sho and Toshi plan to rip off a rival gang a decade later, Kei follows and the team soon meets up with similar-minded Chinese troublemaker Son (Wang Lee Hom) and his sister Yi-Che (Zeny Kwok). Soon stalked by the revenge-thirsting rival gang, the trio lose track of their bloodsucking friend in the ensuing melee. It’s not long before Sho and Son have a falling out and end up in rival gangs, but can the re-emergence of condemned vampire Kei be enough to bring the two old friends back on the same side of the fence again? ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Synopsis / Plot
TEENAGE HOOKER is more like a featurette than a feature film, clocking in at just 60 minutes, including the full credits running twice: once at the beginning and then at the end. I don’t know if that’s a South Korean film industry thing — where this movie was produced — or a decision by the film’s director, Nam Ki-Woong. The plot of the film is also pretty much just what the title says: Young prostitute gets pregnant by her teacher. He has her killed and chopped into little pieces by a trio of hitmen. Mad scientist finds the girl’s dismembered corpse and reanimates her into a robo-hooker. Revived girl gets revenge against her murderers. So, while the story’s pretty slim, at first I thought at least the film was visually imaginative, sort of like what if David Lynch directed a movie for Troma. Artsy but really disgusting at the same time, which is why I became thoroughly disappointed in the flick when the ending was a straight rip-off of the restaurant hit scene in LA FEMME NIKITA, the French thriller remade with Bridget Fonda in the U.S. as POINT OF NO RETURN. My only guess is that maybe both of those films didn’t get wide exposure in South Korea, so not many people over there would get the reference. Or, maybe that was just some kind of point being made by the director. TEENAGE HOOKER is a total mish-mash of styles, so maybe the film was being deliberately blatant instead of a weak homage. For example, instead of implying what a marriage between Robocop and Nikita would look like, Ki-Woong gives us his exact vision of that odd child.

A Heartful of Love (Japanese) 2005

Aka: Kono mune ippai no ai wo
Year: 2005
Directed: Akihiko Shiota
Genre: Drama/Sci Fi/Romance
Runtime: 1hr53min
Country: Japan
Language: Japanese
Subtitles: English
Cast : Hideaki Ito, Mimura
IMDB: Kono mune ippai no ai wo
Synopsis / Plot
While the film’s title may lead one to expect a standard romantic melodrama, A HEARTFUL OF LOVE is a well-crafted fantasy tale that contains a number of sf elements, including time travel.
The main character is Hiroshi Suzutani (played by Hideaki Ito), a 30 year-old advertising executive who returns on business to his childhood hometown of Moji in Kyushu. Also on the airplane are an elderly blind woman, a skittish college professor (Kankuro Kudo), and a 19 year-old yakuza thug named Nunokawa (Ryo Katsuji) who is hiding out following a failed hit assignment. Visiting Moji for the first time in decades, Hiroshi discovers that the port city is exactly as he remembers it; the buildings, the narrow streets, and even the inn his grandmother once owned are completely unchanged. While standing outside his old home, Hiroshi encounters a young boy and is stunned to see it is his 10 year-old self, Hiro (Ryo Tomioka).
As he recovers from his shock at a nearby restaurant, Hiroshi is tracked down by Nunokawa. The pair attempt to piece things together and soon realize they’ve somehow been transported back in time twenty years. With no idea of how they ended up in 1986 or how they will return to 2006, the two realize there’s nothing they can do but settle in and make the most of their circumstances. Nunokawa returns to his criminal roots and Hiroshi takes a job at the inn, rooming with his younger self. The boy Hiro is initially distrustful of the strange man who knows such much about his inner thoughts and feelings, but gradually the two develop a strong bond of trust. Hiroshi also delights in spending time with his unsuspecting grandmother (Chieko Baisho) and a beautiful young violinist named Kazumi (Mimula) who befriended him as a child but had died from a mysterious illness. It’s exciting to see a small picture elbow its way into the spotlight every so often. Despite its minimal budget and lack of established stars, Nabi has captured notice with invitations to several high-profile festivals and a pair of best actress awards. It certainly deserves the attention; this beautiful and strange film offers its viewers a memorable experience.
Nabi is set in the not-too distant future, in a Korea which looks only vaguely familiar. Acid rain and lead poisoning have created new dangers for the population, while the outbreak of a mysterious virus has perversely resulted in a new tourist industry. This so-called Oblivion Virus causes no physical harm, but it erases the memory of its victims. Henceforth a wave of ‘tourists’ begins to flow into the country; people suffering from awful memories, hoping to start their lives over. -[Read More]
