Synopsis / Plot
Tokyo detective Noboru Yoshioka investigates the death of a woman who has been found murdered. She has been drowned in a puddle but her lungs are puzzlingly filled with salt water. Yoshioka is baffled to find a button from one of his own coats near the scene and his fingerprints on the dead body. Next a respectable doctor drowns his wayward son in an identical manner and with evidence at the scene also implicating Yoshioka. Yoshioka is haunted by the ghost of a woman in a red dress who insists that she knows him, even though he is certain that he has never seen her before. Box-office princess Stephy Tang stars as Wai, a sweet young thing afflicted with pancreatic cancer. The prognosis is not good, with only a 20% chance of recovery, but at least she has insanely loving boyfriend Ming (Shawn Yue), who lives with Wai and her little sister Ping (Zeng Qi Qi). While Wai stays at home in their poorly lit, borderline creepy flat, he’s out there trying to make ends meet, but his insistence on knocking off early to race home to Wai results in his unemployment. His new job promises to be slightly more understanding because he’s working for childhood friend Fong (Yoka Yue), but Fong is pretty damn attractive and apparently not so stable with her fiancé. She also had a thing for Ming back in grade school, and Wai is well aware of it, also having attended school with the two of them. Since she’s dying, plus her condition makes intimacy difficult, and Ming may have a chance with a hot ingénue, perhaps Wai should consider some sort of noble sacrifice in order to ease her beloved’s heartbreak. That is, before Ming is tempted into two-timing anyway.
Hold on, there’s also a horror element to add to the mix. Little Ping keeps getting busted at school for reading horror comics, and thinks that Wai is starting to resemble the icky drawings in her pulpy reading material. Wai’s battle with cancer comes with the appropriate mood swings, but there are odd details arising, including her growing disenchantment with Western medicine (she hates chemotherapy), and a growing belief in Eastern practices, including herbal medicine and practicing qigong, or the coordination of breathing patterns via poses and postures, AKA internal martial arts. No, this doesn’t mean Stephy Tang will soon be kicking Shawn Yue’s ass as the toughest terminal beauty around, but she may be able to walk via her hands, plus there may be side effects requiring the creepy stylistic touch of the Pang Brothers. The bigger question may be what’s happening to Ming, because soon Ping starts to think that Ming looks like the drawings in her comic books, too. Since the title of the film is In Love with the Dead, we can only assume that someone is being kicked off. But is it Wai or Ming who’s lacking the pulse? - - LoveHkFilm

Edogawa Rampo (real name: Taro Hirai) is widely considered to be the father of the Japanese detective story. In crafting his own horrific tales, he is said to have been inspired by the famous mystery stories written by Sherlock Holmes’ creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and also those by the originator of the detective genre itself, Edgar Allan Poe (the penname “Edogawa” is a play on Poe’s name). Now, some forty years after his death, four Japanese filmmakers have teamed up to adapt his work for the silver screen in Rampo Noir, a bizarre, often disturbing omnibus film from directors Suguru Takeuchi, Akio Jissoji, Hisayasu Sato, Atsushi Kaneko. All four of these chilling tales star Asano Tadanobu (The Taste of Tea, Ichi the Killer) who plays a number of different characters throughout this increasingly strange motion picture.

Eason Chan continues his streak of good, but sometimes questionable performances with Demi-Haunted, one of the year’s more creative and yet strangely constructed films. Chan is Buster, a tumbler in a Cantonese Opera troupe, who’s at odds with the lead actor (a blustery Anthony Wong) and occasionally the troupe’s director (Christine Ng). Things get hairy when Buster is haunted by the ghost of Giselle (Joey Yung), a former opera diva who specialized in male roles.
At first Buster is simply freaked, but eventually he comes to understand Giselle’s plight. It appears that she was killed by some signage when she performed for the first time as a female. It was windy and a bamboo sign fell and smashed her head. Her untimely demise also split her from her beloved, a gambler named Chang (Nicholas Tse). A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn’t remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death. He begins to explore the narrow confines of his prison and crawls around the maze-like room, only to see a horrible vision of hell waiting for him at each end of the room. Finally he gives up on the struggle and collapses in exhaustion. Then he begins to remember images from his past. Clinging to these images he creeps forward with the last ounces of his strength and meets a woman in a place that stinks of rotting corpses. The man and the woman both try to recall where they came from, but their memories are so uncertain that they are not even sure they want to return.
