Synopsis / Plot
A lecherous scholar (Lawrence Ng) meets a magical surgeon (Kent Cheng) who grafts a horses penis to replace the scholar’s diminutive original equipment. His ensuing adventures include a wide variety of sexual extremes, but waking and dreaming. Meanwhile his wife (Amy Yip) back home has begun her own involuntary sexual mis-adventure, thanks to Elvis Tsui, leading to the climax of this surprisingly tastefully told tale. No, really. Given everything in this movie, it’s astounding how tastefully it’s presented.

The bliss of newlyweds Jack (Eason Chan Yik-shun) and Ching (Jo Kuk Tso-lam) is dashed when the former is critically injured one evening by a hit-and-run driver. He surprises his doctors by making a swift recovery and is soon discharged from the hospital. However, Jack now finds himself plagued with an inexplicable side effect, experiencing horrific visions of a female suicide victim every time he sneezes. This and other strange occurrences leave him wondering if the apartment he and Ching recently moved into is haunted.
On top of this, Ching is now behaving quite strangely, sitting immobile like a zombie and writing the character for “dead” hundreds of times on a piece of paper. Things quickly go from bad to much worse, as the girl begins displaying pronounced signs of possession. Unsure of what to do, Jack and old friend September (Cherrie Ying Choi-yi) follow Ching one day and discover that there is a great deal about her past that she has never revealed, including an old boyfriend who committed suicide.

The Big Scene is the latest film from Korean director Jang Jin, best known for the abstract gangster comedy Guns and Talks, in which he attempted to present a new spin on the usual hitman movie formula. Here, Jin does the same, trying to reinvigorate the traditional detective thriller by working in the cynical theme of modern society’s obsession with the media and by infusing the film with a decidedly offbeat sense of humour. This in itself is nothing new, as many action film makers have chosen to work in social commentary through a critical presentation of the media, as seen most recently in Johnnie To’s Breaking News. However, Jin’s film takes a different, slightly more satirical route, adopting the narrative format of television crime drama in a cinematic manner in an effort to produce something fresh and inventive.
The film begins in familiar fashion, with the discovery of a woman’s body in a hotel room, apparently stabbed to death. The police already have the prime suspect in custody, Kim Young Hoon (the ever twitchy Shin Ha Kyun, Save the Green Planet) who was spotted visiting the victim earlier in the evening. The police investigation, led by prosecutor Choi Yeon Hee (Cha Seung Won, Ghost House) takes place in a special custom built office where every aspect of the case can be filmed for a television program.
