Plot/Synopsis
This is a story about a man on a mission to find spiritual enlightenment. Banished from his monastery, the man flees to a cave in the mountains with a beautiful, but “untouchable” spurned fiancée of the head monk. In his mountain cave, the man prays for guidance to the mountain god, who gives him a task to complete before he will attain “the core of Dharma.” As he completes this task, he is given the name Angulimala by the local population, which is terrified of him. Finally, Angulimala is put on a different path by another spiritual guide.

Plot/Synopsis
To be totally honest I wasn’t expecting much at all going into 9 Souls even after reading heap upon heap of praise plied upon it but to say I was surprised would be a major understatement, in short I was totally blown away.
The basic plot is as simple as they come, nine prison inmates ranging from a drug pusher all the way up to multiple murderer’s escape from prison and go in search of a secret stash presumed to be forged money hidden by a tenth inmate who cracked and was dragged away by guards shortly before their escape but it’s the direction that director Toshiaki Toyoda takes this simple story that is so brilliant and original perfectly blending drama, comedy and violence creating a truly one of kind movie that deserve’s to be seen not only fans of Asian cinema but cinema in general.
Superbly acted, emotional, funny, violent and at times very surreal this is a movie has it all.

A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn’t remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death. He begins to explore the narrow confines of his prison and crawls around the maze-like room, only to see a horrible vision of hell waiting for him at each end of the room. Finally he gives up on the struggle and collapses in exhaustion. Then he begins to remember images from his past. Clinging to these images he creeps forward with the last ounces of his strength and meets a woman in a place that stinks of rotting corpses. The man and the woman both try to recall where they came from, but their memories are so uncertain that they are not even sure they want to return.
