Synopsis / Plot
The film follows a family in the central Chinese city of Chongqing made up of retired policeman Li (He Xingquan), his second wife Zhang (Guan Jiangge) and their two sons from former marriages. Neither of the younger generation are doing too well, with Li’s son Jianjun (Liao Zhong) working long hours as a taxi driver, putting strain on his new marriage, and Zhang’s son Xiaolei (Xu Tao) running wild with a gang of hooligans. Synopsis / Plot
Former MTV director Hiroyuki Nakano follows up on his stylish pastiche of samurai flicks with this slick romantic comedy. Set in Tokyo in 2002, the film centers on Keisuke (Masatoshi Nagase), a fledgling actor who manages to snag a bit part in a samurai actioner when he catches the eye of the film’s star, Mika (Kumiko Asou). This lucky break proves to be a mixed blessing, as the lead samurai (Naoto Takenaka) is a vain prima donna who blames Keisuke for his foul-ups. Keisuke’s personal life is equally chaotic — his longtime girlfriend Eri (Akiko Monou) just dumped him; and even though he finds solace in the arms of Mika, he can’t forget his ex. Meanwhile, Eri — who is mute in the wake of the breakup — gets dragged to a panel discussion on the environment by her television-director sister Kaoru (Tamaki Ayakawa). There she learns that the same swarthy Italian guy (Daniel Ezralow) who picked her up a week ago is one of the impaneled experts. As he renews his seduction of the lush-lipped Eri, she longs for Keisuke.

This 2002 film from acclaimed Japanese cyber-punk director Shinya Tsumamoto takes a decidedly different direction in story-telling than his previous works. Rinko (Asuka Kurosawa) is a telephone suicide counselor who prides herself on saving lives on a daily basis. Her husband (Yuji Kohtari) is distant and a workaholic. A photographer (Shinya Tsumamoto) decides he wants to pay Rinko back for saving his life by making her “do what she really wants,” blackmailing her with explicit pictures in order to help her achieve the life she tells others to achieve over the phone.
The film is shot with a grainy blue filter and includes captivating imagery of a bleak urban Japan. Sexually-charged and at times bizarre, “A Snake of June” is nevertheless one of the more accessible of Tsumamoto’s films and a must-see for any fans of modern Japanese cinema.
