Synopsis / Plot

Just doing his job, magazine editor Taishin Mamiya (Yoshikazu Kotani) interviews high school model Noeru Kisaragi (Takumi Saito). Despite Noeru’s bad attitude, an enchanting picture of the ocean he draws leads Mamiya to invite him out for dinner afterwards. They connect at the restaurant, but while in the bathroom there Noeru solicits Mamiya sexually. The next morning, Noeru’s office calls the magazine office where Mamiya works. “Your editor was rude. Have him come and apologize.” When Mamiya goes to Noeru’s house to deliver the apology, he sees Noeru with a dirty-looking man. Mamiya is shocked to discover at that moment that his interest in Noeru goes beyond article research–he truly wants to know more about him.

Synopsis / Plot

Two brothers have differing interests. Dae-jun loves car racing. Ho-jun, on the other hand, loves carpentry, art and gardening. In spite of this, the two are known to be very close. Ho-jun marries his girlfriend, Eun-soo. Dae-jun decides to take part in a car race final, regardless of his brother’s objections. Ho-jun still goes to support his brother in the car race, but is late and forced to hail a taxi. The speeding taxi crashed into a lorry, and Ho-jun was left seriously injured. The same time the taxi crashed, Dae-jun’s car overturns, leaving him injured as well.

Both Dae-jun and Ho-jun fell into comas. A year later, Dae-jun wakes up, but is unable to walk properly due, in part, to his past injuries.

Dae-jun is brought home by Eun-soo, where she attempts to take care of him while he recovers. Eun-soo notices Dae-jun watering the plants in the same way Ho-jun used to. Synopsis / Plot

It’s ensemble fever! With Sin City from Hollywood and A Day on the Planet from Japan, ensemble films seem to be all the rage these days. One of the craziest of them all is Survive Style 5+, the feature debut from award-winning commercial directors Gen Sekiguchi (as director) and Taku Tada (as screenwriter). The two men have concocted one of the most manic and - to an equal degree - nonsensical feature debuts in years, and it’s not a bad movie to boot.

Survive Style 5+ consists of five interweaving and irrelevant stories. 1) Aman (cult favorite Tadanobu Asano) had just killed his wife (Reika Hashimoto) and buries her in the forest. He returns to their house, only to find her sitting at the kitchen table alive and well - and that’s just the beginning. 2) Yoko (Kyoko Koizumi, presumably not related to the prime minister) is a commercial executive who constantly amuses herself with her zany commercial ideas that she records into her handy tape recorder. Unfortunately, they fail to impress neither her hypnotist lover (Hiroshi Abe) nor the clients. 3) A businessman just scored rare tickets to see the hypnotist’s show with his seemingly perfect family. 4) Vinnie Jones (from Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, among others) plays a British hitman who shows up at the hypnotist’s show with translator Yoshiyoshi Arakawa and indirectly changes the life of the aforementioned perfect family. 5) Three punks wander around the city breaking into people’s houses, but they find bigger problems when sexual confusion is thrown into the mix. The movie is based on a real story about the life of a North Korean defector and his family. Actor Cha In-pyo starred as a North Korean coal miner who crossed illegally into China to get medicine for his wife. His wife passed away soon after he crossed the border, and he was separated from his 11-year-old son (played by Shin Myung-chul) who was trying to trace him from North Korea. The story shares the hardship of North Korean refugees in the late 1990s, with famine striking the country and killed an estimated 1 million people. The North Koreans couldn’t cross into South Korea directly because of landmines and heavy military presence at the border… these defectors had to cross into China and made a de-tour to South Korea instead. The Chinese government, an ally of the North Korean regime, does not recognize the defectors as refugees and would send them back to North Korea to face stiff action.
