Synopsis / Plot

Following up on his acclaimed debut Moonlight Whispers (about a sadomasochistic relationship between two teens), Akihiko Shiota once again looks at troubled youth.

Sachiko (played by Aoi Miyazaki of Eureka fame) is a 13-year-old junior high school student with a complicated family life. Her father left when she was an infant for a young mistress. Her mother (Ryo) — a secretive and weirdly distanced woman — works as a hostess and a kept woman for a mysterious gangster type.
Sachiko finds some modicum of solace in the arms of her sixth grade teacher, Ogata (Seiichi Tanabe) who has a brief affair with her. As a result, he quits his job and starts working for a nuclear power plant far away.

When her mother makes another halfhearted attempt at suicide, Sachiko’s shattered emotional life becomes too much to bear and she drops out of school. Though she continues to correspond with Ogata, Sachiko is desperately lonely and alienated, leading to her consorting with other social dropouts.
When her sole school friend Natsuko urges her to return to school, Sachiko finds that her long simmering rage against the world becomes difficult to control.

As “Platonic Sex” opens, Ai is on the verge of suicide when fate intervenes by way of her cellphone. She gets a text message from a young man name Toshi (Joh Odagiri), who is sending a birthday message to his dead sister, whose cellphone number Ai happens to presently own. Saved by Toshi’s heartfelt message and gratitude toward her for “being born”, Ai steps off the ledge, feeling some semblance of hope.
In quick order, we learn what has happened to Ai in her very short life (she just turned 17). After being gang raped by classmates, she is blamed for the crime, beaten by her father, and kicked out of the house. On the street and penniless, Ai goes to work at a bar frequented by old salarymen, where she is befriended by the bar’s popular hostess, Akemi (Maho Nonami). But life has a lot more in installed for Ai than just playing up to the fantasies of old, drunken men. Kanei (Taishu Kase), the man who introduced Ai to the world of bar hosting, convinces her that the only way to pay off her debts (she’s a shopaholic) is to go into porn. (Beyond Hollywood)
