Synopsis / Plot
Tokyo detective Noboru Yoshioka investigates the death of a woman who has been found murdered. She has been drowned in a puddle but her lungs are puzzlingly filled with salt water. Yoshioka is baffled to find a button from one of his own coats near the scene and his fingerprints on the dead body. Next a respectable doctor drowns his wayward son in an identical manner and with evidence at the scene also implicating Yoshioka. Yoshioka is haunted by the ghost of a woman in a red dress who insists that she knows him, even though he is certain that he has never seen her before. Plot/Synopsis

She has the bad habit of making up for her lost love by peeking at other people in the shop. After some unfortunate circumstances, the laundromat is closed down. With the passing of his grandmother, Teru is left alone. Teru sadly bids his grandmother a final farewell in the company of Mizue, both having tasted life’s tragic turns time and time again.

Edogawa Rampo (real name: Taro Hirai) is widely considered to be the father of the Japanese detective story. Now, some forty years after his death, four Japanese filmmakers have teamed up to adapt his work for the silver screen in Rampo Noir, a bizarre, often disturbing omnibus film from directors Suguru Takeuchi, Akio Jissoji, Hisayasu Sato, Atsushi Kaneko. All four of these chilling tales star Asano Tadanobu (The Taste of Tea, Ichi the Killer) who plays a number of different characters throughout this increasingly strange motion picture.

Plot/Synopsis
To be totally honest I wasn’t expecting much at all going into 9 Souls even after reading heap upon heap of praise plied upon it but to say I was surprised would be a major understatement, in short I was totally blown away.
The basic plot is as simple as they come, nine prison inmates ranging from a drug pusher all the way up to multiple murderer’s escape from prison and go in search of a secret stash presumed to be forged money hidden by a tenth inmate who cracked and was dragged away by guards shortly before their escape but it’s the direction that director Toshiaki Toyoda takes this simple story that is so brilliant and original perfectly blending drama, comedy and violence creating a truly one of kind movie that deserve’s to be seen not only fans of Asian cinema but cinema in general.
Superbly acted, emotional, funny, violent and at times very surreal this is a movie has it all.

A man wakes up to find himself locked in a tiny, cramped concrete room, in which he can barely move. He doesn’t remember why he is there and where he came from. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death. He begins to explore the narrow confines of his prison and crawls around the maze-like room, only to see a horrible vision of hell waiting for him at each end of the room. Finally he gives up on the struggle and collapses in exhaustion. Then he begins to remember images from his past. Clinging to these images he creeps forward with the last ounces of his strength and meets a woman in a place that stinks of rotting corpses. The man and the woman both try to recall where they came from, but their memories are so uncertain that they are not even sure they want to return.
