Synopsis :

The story follows a young man named Wei Siu Bo Tony Leung. He is clever, perverted, and addicted to gambling. He spends his time hangout around his mother’s workplace, a brothel in Yang Zhou. By coincidence, he is taken into the palace by an old blind but powerful eunich and accidentally makes friends with the emperor. Synopsis :

Chuno is an epic historical drama that is one of the highest rated series in 2010 in South Korea, and which has already found much success internationally. Synopsis :

Synopsis :
Based on a short story written by Shuhei Fujisawa (who also wrote Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, Love and Honor), the film depicts the uneasy life of Noe Isomura (Rena Tanaka) with the difficult family she has married into after her former husband passed away. One day as she tries to brake off a branch of a cherry tree, she is aided by a samurai who she does not recognize but who recognizes her. He turns out to be a former suitor that she never met named Yaichiro Tezuka (Noriyuki Higashiyama) and who teaches swordsmanship to the local samurai. Meanwhile, the powerful new chief retainer of the village enacts land policies that threaten the survival of the local farmers.

Beautiful, moving, wonderful direction and costuming. This film, set in the Edo period, really captures the hardship that all facets of society experienced throughout this turbulent time in Japanese history. A sweet romantic story balanced by the harsh and unjust cruelty that was metered out by corrupt authorities. A simple story on honour and justice. The director, Tetsuo Shinohara, shows a wonderful maturity in his direction, with pace and beauty moving the story along without wallowing in too much sentimentality. A beautiful balance of all the elements of film making; performances and direction, score, editing, script and art direction come together make this film a captivating experience. Rena Tanaka and Noriyuki Higashiyama are wonderfully poised and moving in their performances, both beautiful and completely look the part. I was so moved and completely drawn into this film. Beautiful ideas, beautiful images, moving score and above all, it comes together to tell a story that is a timeless classic. Mesmerizing.

Synopsis :

The time is 1905, when some 30 years of Japanese economic and political pressure culminated in Korea signing over its sovereignty to become a protectorate of Japan. Resentment against the Japanese was high and in this era was born Korea’s first baseball team. The YMCA baseball team became a source of pride for the Korean people humiliated by its forced subservience to Japan. Director KIM Hyeon-seok (writer for JSA and The Isle, among others) was inspired by the real-life tale of the Seoul YMCA baseball team to make this light comedy that any fan of the “underdog prevails” sports film genre will appreciate.

“YMCA Baseball Team” begins with Ho-chang (SONG Gang-ho of Shiri, JSA, and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) sneaking into the yard of an American missionary to retrieve a lostball. It is there that he witnesses the sport of baseball for the very first time. In addition to being enraptured by the strange game, Ho-chang also finds himself attracted to the comely Jeong-rim (KIM Hye-su of “Kick the Moon” ), a foreign-educated woman working with the missionary who is organizing the first baseball team — the YMCA Baseball Team.

Without wasting any time, Ho-chang joins the newly formed team and becomes the star batter, playing alongside his best friend Gwang-tae (Hwang Jeong-min of “Waikiki Brothers” ), as well as the clean-cut Dae-hyeon (KIM Ju-hyeok of “Say Yes” ), who may be a rival for Jung-rim’s affections. Soon, the YMCA Baseball Team, with its oddball collection of players, becomes an unbeatable force. Unfortunately, Ho-chang must keep his new pastime secret from his scholar father, who would rather see his son become a serious scholar, a vocation for which Ho-chang is woefully ill equipped to handle.

Meanwhile, political events are transforming the significance and symbolic value of the YMCA Baseball Team’s unbeaten streak. Gwang-tae’s diplomat father assists in brokering the Eulsa Treaty with Japan that confirms Korea’s loss of sovereignty and quickly becomes a target for assassination by anti-Japanese rebels. Furthermore, Jung-rim’s father MIN Yeong-hwan, a high-rank government official, commits suicide to protest the treaty. Finally, the team finds its practice grounds usurped by Japanese soldiers, who promptly challenge them to a game. No longer a mere game for just passing the time, baseball has become the last, best hope for raising the downtrodden spirit of a conquered land.
