Synopsis / Plot

In one of the darkest and diverse cultural part in the city, there is a minority group who lives in the place where it is full of despair and frustration. Their desperate living comprises illegal gambling, prostitution as well as drug-dealing. This chaotic region is unique within the city.

On one occasion, a cop, Mickey, and a theft, Tai-hoi, riding in a vehicle, unexpectedly crashes into the iron gate of the restricted region. Both men are severely injured and lose their conscious. After they woke up, they found themselves chained up by Crow and his followers. Crow, who is the ruler of the restricted region, hates police and he decided to execute Mickey and Tai-hoi because he believes that one of them is a cop. Meanwhile, a charming woman called Ling, suddenly steps forward from the crowd and revealed that she had worked with Mickey doing the burglary business in the olden days. And so, Tai-hoi remains in custody and Mickey left with Ling. Ling accuses Tai Hoi mainly because he is her husband who did not responsibly take care of her and her daughter, Yan, in the past, remaining them to be rudely controlled by Crow for years. Furthermore, she hopes Mickey can help her to escape from the restricted region.

At the same time, a fatal virus is spreading all over the restricted region. And the government is decided to send cops to kill all human and animal inside the restricted region. Crow orders his followers to counter the invasion of the anti-virus cops.

Synopsis / Plot

TEENAGE HOOKER is more like a featurette than a feature film, clocking in at just 60 minutes, including the full credits running twice: once at the beginning and then at the end. I don’t know if that’s a South Korean film industry thing — where this movie was produced — or a decision by the film’s director, Nam Ki-Woong. The plot of the film is also pretty much just what the title says: Young prostitute gets pregnant by her teacher. He has her killed and chopped into little pieces by a trio of hitmen. Mad scientist finds the girl’s dismembered corpse and reanimates her into a robo-hooker. Revived girl gets revenge against her murderers. So, while the story’s pretty slim, at first I thought at least the film was visually imaginative, sort of like what if David Lynch directed a movie for Troma. Artsy but really disgusting at the same time, which is why I became thoroughly disappointed in the flick when the ending was a straight rip-off of the restaurant hit scene in LA FEMME NIKITA, the French thriller remade with Bridget Fonda in the U.S. as POINT OF NO RETURN. My only guess is that maybe both of those films didn’t get wide exposure in South Korea, so not many people over there would get the reference. Or, maybe that was just some kind of point being made by the director. TEENAGE HOOKER is a total mish-mash of styles, so maybe the film was being deliberately blatant instead of a weak homage. For example, instead of implying what a marriage between Robocop and Nikita would look like, Ki-Woong gives us his exact vision of that odd child.

Based on a sensational real life criminal case, the film tells the tale of Grace Li (Emily Kwan), a prostitute who was killed by her pimp Wayne Lai, and subsequently tortured and dismembered. The signature detail of the crime - a human skull hidden inside an incredibly cute stuffed animal (HELLO KITTY) - is presented here, along with the chilling moments leading up to the discovery of Grace Li’s body, including lots of grisly gore and the stomach-churning sight of the perpetrators actually carrying out the crime. Director Bennie Chan spares nobody in his quest to bring graphic images of human horror and media-hyped sickness to the Hong Kong screen. Co-starring Amanda Lee and Luo Lan, this film is most definitely not for the weak-of-heart. However, viewers with the inclination - and the iron-cast stomach - for such elaborate displays of degradation may find what they’re looking for in Human Pork Chop!. The real life case also inspired another film called There is a Secret in My Soup.

…It’s silly, it’s unbelievable and it’s over-the-top, but none of that matters. Drunken Monkey is deliciously entertaining well worth a look. If you’ve not explored Asian cinema until Kill Bill, it’s not too late, and Drunken Monkey is a great place to start.
