Synopsis / Plot
Ryou Nishimura’s 1st feature film. Based on the novel by Arimasa Oosawa. The title roughly means ‘Angel’s fung: B.T.A.’ – Asuka is a young police detective. She is in love with her partner, Furuyoshi. One day, Hatsumi, a mistress of the cruel drug lord Kimikuni, calls police asking for help. Asuka is assigned to escort her. But they are both shot by someone. Hatsumi becomes brain dead. Asuka’s body is hopelessly damaged, but her brain remains inrtact. Asuka survives with her brain transplanted to Hatsumi’s body. Synopsis / Plot

Synopsis / Plot
An Chang-jin is a barber, a third-generation barber, in fact. He chats with customers, cuts their hair, shaves them. His everyday life is so ordinary and dull at the peaceful barbershop, except that his wife is young and beautiful. Then, one day a strange customer, Kim Yang-gil, visits the barbershop. He has “HATE” tattooed upon each finger joint. He gets a shave, a haircut and demands money three times a week. The intimidator takes double money each time he visits. The barber gradually is driven into a corner and he wants to escape from the bully but it is beyond his capacity because he is smart, minute, violent, mean and sly. Moreover, the intimidator casts an amorous glance at the barber’s wife and the barber, who can’t bear this anymore, hires a detective. The appearance of the detective seems to bring him peace but it’s just for a while. On the contrary, the curious detective watches for a chance to catch the barber unawares plus his riddling wife complicates this affair. The odd encounter with the barber, the stranger, the detective and the barber’s wife comes to an unexpected end.

This is a story about a policewoman’s intricate love lives: Her husband, Tie Jun, dies saving her life despite he knows he is not the father of their baby; Mao Jie, a drug trafficker, her baby’s father, the one she loved but becomes her enemy after an operation which led to the death of his parent; and Yang Rui, a city slicker toy boy, whose love and care for her finally moves her badly scarred heart, but is injured when Mao Jie comes to take revenge on An Xin. At the last scene, An Xin meets Mao Jie alone, when both of their closest kin are killed by each other, only till death they can resolve their hatred.
Ann Hui’s Goddess of Mercy is a difficult film to pin down. While the plot screams routine suspense thriller, the slow, opaque storytelling and generous focus on star Vicki Zhao would seem to indicate a female character study along the lines of Hui’s more personal films. On the other hand, having Nicholas Tse appear as a charismatic, ill-fated drug smuggler would appear to be large concession to the commercial powers that be—except his role will likely turn off most of his teenybopper fanbase. This juxtaposition of commercial and artistic elements is what makes Goddess of Mercy intriguing—and ultimately only partly successful. – - LoveHkFilm

Chinese manga translation about young triad guys on their way up is decent, solid work from the newly formed BOB (Best of the Best), run by Wong Jing, Manfred Wong, and Andrew Lau Wai-Keung. Plot: Young triad guys Chan Ho-Nam (Ekin Cheng), Chicken (Jordan Chan), and their buddies (Jerry Lamb, Michael Tse, and Jason Chu) work for the fatherly Brother B (Ng Chi-Hung) of the Hung Hing group. Eventually, they move up the ladder when they impress their benevolent boss Mr. Chiang (Simon Yam). Things go bad when the scummy Ugly Kwan (Francis Ng) runs Chiang out of the top seat. When our heroes get on Kwan’s bad side, he does his best to screw them big time, leading to all sorts of triad angst. Ultimately, the buddies’ friendship is tested by their individual hardships. Nam and Chicken have a falling out which threatens to destroy the solidarity of the kids. But when it counts, they band together and prevail in gang fights as only young triad guys do. Gigi Lai appears as Smartie, Nam’s stuttering triad girlfriend. The two main stars, Ekin Cheng and Jordan Chan, do well, but the film is owned by Francis Ng who hilariously overacts to the film’s benefit. This is decent flick that entertains, but takes itself just a bit too seriously.
