E01. Timeless Journey: Taiwan – The Suhua Highway
This amazing drive, hugging sea-cliffs along Taiwan’s east coast, is simply staggering. If you haven’t had the chance to experience it, you need to get out and do it. The highway is located between I-lan and Hualien, with its northern terminus in the port town of Suao, and southern near the entrance to Taroko Gorge National Park. Allow a couple of hours, as road conditions are not conducive to fast driving, with nasty curves and climbs, falling rocks and trees, trucks, and road construction.

Plot/Sypnosis:
Street Life documents the lives of Chinese migrants in Shanghai, one of the world’s largest and most vibrant cities, now symbolic of China’s economic might. The film centers on Nanjing Road, one of China’s oldest commercial streets and today a popular destination for tourists and moneyed Chinese. The street has also become a Mecca for uprooted and homeless Chinese, who make ends by collecting garbage and recyclables. These characters and their stories are the focus of the film.

The central character in Street Life is a migrant known as “Black Skin.” Black Skin faces numerous pressures in the course of the film, including police violence. In the end, these pressures are too much for him to bear and he goes mad. Black Skin’s story intersects with those of fellow bottle collectors, enterprising thieves and even a young boy who has been abandoned.

Plot/Sypnosis:
After a movie set largely in one room (the excellent Spying Cam), WHANG Cheon-mean takes to the open road with three mismatched strangers who think they have a common purpose.
A woman who called herself “Joaquin” meets two men by arrangement in a car park. We soon discover that they’ve previous ‘met’ on the suicide website she hosts. They pool their money and start driving; when the money runs out, they’ll all end their lives. There are tensions from the start. The talkative guy (he calls himself “LA” ) has brought along his pet dog and can’t stand Joaquin’s choice of ‘suicide music’. Then the macho, taciturn guy (“Heballet” ) takes the car and leaves the others stranded…
The film has several surprises, but respects the tradition of the road movie. The characters are changed by being thrown together, by the people they meet and by the very act of travelling, and their destination is not the one they expected.
Whang, the doyen of Korea’s indie filmmakers, is obviously responding to the phenomenon of internet suicide clubs, but he also has plenty to say about men, women and the changing mood and direction of the Left. — Tony Rayns

Plot/Sypnosis:
The global nuclear war turns the planet into a dessert battlefield. In an area called “Avalon (f)”, three beautiful female assault hunters: Gray (Meisa Kuroki), Lucifer (Rinko Kikuchi) and Colonel (Hinako Saeki) are hunting for giant sand whales called Sunakujira.
Gray pilots a fighter plane, Lucifer is a sorcerer who can transform herself and Colonel is a woman fighter equipped with a rifle gun. The sand whales have multiple eyes that can move through the volcanic ash and the hunters use both land and sky to fight with these monsters.
The main feature in this virtual reality game is to battle out with Madara Sunakujira, the biggest giant sand whale and the “Game Master” (Ian Moore) watches the players from the air and reminds Gray to cooperate with Lucifer and Colonel to overpower Madara. Will Madara gets defeated in the end?

Plot/Sypnosis:
Chen Yi-hua, known to his friends as Ah Hua, narrowly wins the 888 Night Market union leader election despite the dirty tricks of rival Tsai Hung-kuei. But the stall holders of the night market are anything but united, competing for customers in a war that pits the tastiness of juicy steaks against the flavor of jumbo chicken fillets.

Ah Hua falls for reporter Yi-nan, setting her up to win the night market’s beauty contest that she has only come to photograph. In shock, she unwittingly disrupts the market’s power supply and must serve her community service at the market, helping out at different stalls. When she’s dumped by her boyfriend Chris, she begins to recognise Ah Hua’s qualities.

Meanwhile, property developers are planning a fifteen-storey building atop the market with shopping malls, gyms and a hotel, and are paying off local councillor Chang Chin-liang with a multi-million dollar bribe. When gangsters trash the market, Ah Hua decides to unite the stallholders to fight for their livelihoods while Yi-nan employs the power of the media.
