BLOODY humour, omens of doom, family lunacy, and a trail of dead bodies are the essential components in this campy Korean black comedy set to the frantic pace of rockabilly and other poppy American tunes.

The apparently innocuous Kang family reside in Misty Lodge housing guests, cleaning, cooking, and maintaining a simple way of life. That is until they find the dead body in room 203.

What happens next is absurdly comical, as father, uncle and son frantically dispose of the corpse in the woods. This hasty act foreshadows the bloody fate of each subsequent lodger that checks in. The humour lies in the inadvertent circumstances surrounding each death. At first they are accidental. But as the body count rises there seems to be no limit to what the family will do to avoid being found out.

“The Quiet Family” is comically brilliant. It is also a ruthless presentation of the selfishness of human nature. The dynamic of the family proves to be nothing more than a larger manifestation of this.

Set in a context particular to Korean culture, director Kim Ji- Woon’s message remains universal. He leaves understatement at the wayside, allowing us to laugh whole-heartedly at the family’s farcical attempts to keep everything together when life is unravelling at the seams.

Not having the best of days, mild mannered Chi-Seong (Jeong Jae-Young) is dumped by his girlfriend. Although being a professional baseball player, Chi-Seong hasn�t had much luck with girls and in fact has never been in love. To make matters worse he is told on the same day by his doctor that he has only 3 months left to live. Absolutely devastated, he goes to a nearby pub to drink away his sorrows. Director Jo Bum Gu might not be a big name (yet), but he had earlier raised eyebrows in the industry for his little known debut, The Bad Utterances, a low-budget affair which expertly mixed action, comedy, and coming-of-age tropes. Bar Legend is a bigger and better version of his debut film with one very important detail: this time it�s Jung Doo Hong (The City of Violence) behind the wheel for action! Throw in singer MC Mong (in his film debut), former musical actor Park Gun Hyung (Innocent Steps), and a couple of gangsters, and we have a winning cinema experience.

Back in the day, Jung Kwon (Park Gun Hyung) and his two buddies Sung Hyun (Lee Cheon Hee of The Aggressives) and Kyung Ro (MC Mong) were renowned around the riverbank behind school as the �No Touch Gang�. Kyung Ro�s mouth was scarier than his fists and Sung Hyun lacked experience in fighting despite trying really hard, but Jung Kwon had the charisma and superb fighting skills. As the years pass, things change for them all. Work, family, and life get in the way, and even the riverbank is changing. Now it�s not just fights between students anymore; organized crime is starting to make a mark in the area. Will the trio be able to go back to their glory days of youth?

My cinematic memory of South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun was in macho action movies like JSA and A Bittersweet Life, so Once in a Summer appeals because I am curious to know how he would do in an out and out soppy romance, released in time this month for Valentine’s Day. And the verdict is yes, it will hit the right spots with the romantics out there, but even as I rolled my eyes at the formula employed for a romance, I was won over by its hard hitting ending, and moments as described in one of my favourite songs…

Moving Targets (Hong Kong) 2004

The Hong Kong film Moving Targets is about two childhood friends who became cops with the Hong Kong Police and how their lives begin to unfold after they graduate the police academy. In the beginning of the movie, the main characters Fit (Edison Chen) and Cheung Wai-Kit (Nicholas Tse) and two of their buddies are out celebrating. In midst of a wild night, they run into a group of Triad gangsters. There is a pretty intense action/gunfight scene, followed by a change in the wind. Because of their valiant efforts, the four friends get assigned to a major case squad. Oddly enough, the detail is run by Kit’s father (Simon Yam), who doesn’t know Kit is his son. Soap opera alert? Kit’s father walked out on him when he was a young boy and since then, Kit has changed his name and his father doesn’t recognize him. As the story continues to unfold, the lives of Kit and Fit are outlined. Kit’s career moves ahead with a promotion to the internal investigation bureau. On the other hand, Fit begins to run in trouble when a Triad boss blackmails him. The underlying story and attraction is watching these two characters move in nearly opposite stations in life.
