Virgin Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors (2000) (Korean)
A young man arrives at a hotel for an assignation; she calls to say she’s not coming. He is Jae-hoon, she is Soo-jung; they’ve met through Young-soo, an independent filmmaker. Soo-jung writes for him; Jae-hoon may finance his film project. In two long parallel flashbacks, from varying points of view, we see what precedes the date at the hotel. Details differ, and one account includes events missing from the other. Characters are quiet and self-contained, then animated; victims apologize. Each character frequently asks, “Really?” What has really happened? Is one account more accurate? Is a kiss the most enjoyable and promising human contact? Connections are tenuous and fragile.
Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (Oh! Soo-jung) is a 2000 South Korean comedy-drama film, directed by Sang-soo Hong. It follows the romantic travails of a video producer and a gallery owner, and the web of deceit they spin around their relationship. It was an early success in the short career of female star Lee Eun-ju, who would commit suicide five years later.

kyong-Son is a tough as nails ex-female gangster, who is down on her luck and now working as a taxi cab driver. To make matters worse, her husband left her years ago and now she is constantly harrassed by the mafia to payback his debts that he left behind. Kyong-Son soons meets Soo-Jin in a fateful car accident. Soo-Jin has aspirations to become a pop singer in Japan, but is burdened with a sadistic boxer/thug/boyfriend that beats her at willl. She comes up with an idea on how to get herself and Kyong-Son out of their miserable situations but it requires Kyong-Son’s help and trust. Their motives are not always clear and they both seem to have something to hide, but they decide to go for the big score together. Fast paced noir’ish movie, that will bring to mind such film like Snatch and Pulp Ficton. The characters in the movie were many and all interesting; a washed-up middle-aged female cab driver, a sexy wannabe pop singer, an abusive boxer, a human martial arts fighting machine that never speaks a word, incompetent debt collectors, very bizarre gangsters and a bunch of unlucky cops and moronic informants. Viewer should be prepared for some heavy violence at times in the movie (street fights, martial art battles, and some gruesome dog-fighting scenes as well). No Blood No Tears plays out in the familiar gangster genre, but the movie is so engaging because of the cast of crazy characters, unpredicatble plot, the fact that most of the characters are not good or evil but drift somewhere in between, and Hye-yeong Lee who was absolutely brilliant playing her part as the washed up cab driver. Highly recommended if you crave a fun, fast paced, unpredictable, gangster movie.

Mainland Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s Still Life (aka Sanxia Haoren), a last minute entry into the 2006 Venice Film Festival, eventually won the Golden Lion award thanks to its top-notch cinematography and wonderful storytelling. Still Life interweaves the story of a miner (Han Sanming) who travels thousands of miles to a town near the Yangtze River to look for his ex-wife and a nurse fetching her husband who has been working at the river without sending a single word home. While the film does not let these two characters cross paths, together they reflect changes in people’s lives brought by the Three Gorges Dam, which flooded villages near the Yangtze River and led to the emergence of some new settlements. Already acclaimed for his earlier works, most of which also star Han Sanming and Zhao Tao, Jia is probaby the best known Sixth Generation director.
