Synopsis / Plot

Chengdu nowadays. The state owned factory 420 shuts down to give way to a complex of luxury apartments called “24 CITY”. Three generations, eight characters : old workers, factory executives and yuppies, their stories melt into the History of China.

Underlined by the gritty realism and social consciousness prevalent in all of Jia’s works from Xiao Wu to Still Life, 24 City tells in part fiction, part documentary fashion the decades-spanning story of three factory women portrayed by Joan Chen (Lust, Caution), Lu Liping (Love Will Tear Us Apart), and Jia Zhangke’s usual leading lady Zhao Tao (Still Life). Set in the southwesterncity of Chengdu, the film captures the sweeping changes of the past few decades through the fortunes and fallouts of three women of different times and places, and the factory that ties their lives together.
