A maid-in-waiting hangs herself within the palace walls. However, while performing the autopsy, imperial medic Chun-ryung suspects murder and starts an investigation. With a taste for justice and full of wisdom, Chun-ryung bravely uncovers the deceptions. But she is soon confronted with a hidden past kept secret by those with far more power than she could ever imagine.
Through Shadows in the Palace, I wanted to bring to light the stories of the neglected and hidden people’s lives in history. In the repressive palace, where women remain nothing but shadows in time, I hoped to show that court ladies, too, struggled with uncontrollable, natural desires and ambitions.
By showing how they had to cast aside and destroy themselves, I wanted people to experience the unrest, insecurity, and fundamental fear that people forced to live according to social prejudice must feel. Likewise, as we struggle to survive in the midst of millions of people but are eventually weeded out and forgotten, we too may be living in a modern day dark ‘palace’ much like the court ladies.

It was fascinating to watch, but I didn’t get it!!! T_T I didn’t even pause the movie once, and the ending left me so confused. I need someone to explain this for me, please.
True..its an awsome movie…what i understood in the climax is the who hung herself becomes a ghost and she is also the queens sister. Finally she poses the queen and makes the baby as the future king/prince. But not sure why the court nurse’s palm is cut and even the queens palm is also cut if you would notice …may be some of our korean friends can explain..

Iam a die hard fan of Korean Movies…they are fantabulus movies which has the potentials to beat Hollywood movies.

If you like a good murder or ghost story, I think you’ll enjoy this film.
I put off watching this one, thinking was one more for the girls. I was a bit confused at some points, the flash backs would have been better in black & white instead of off colour. But it is clear by the end, that the spirit has killed those responsible and possessed the kings concubine.
I understand that Heebin was possessed by her sister’s ghost, but i don’t understand why the court nurse’s hand was cut and she wasn’t saying anything?
