A group of three completely different friends share a very common reality. They have no money. As they scrounge through life their worries compile as they talk of fleeing to Vietnam, robbing old ladies or even selling their own bodies. All because driving a Taxi in Seoul during the 90’s just doesn’t quite pay the bills.

If you are interested in understanding Korean society through movies, “Ray-bang” is the perfect film. Director Chang Hyun-soo is very good at organizing the whole thing to produce a slice-of-life film. In particular, the characters are so realistic that the audience will feel as if they may bump into one of those actors in the street. The title “Ray-bang” is the mispronunciation of “Ray-Ban,” the famous sunglasses that were originally developed for pilots in 1937. Here the sunglasses signify a shield that an individual uses to defend himself or herself against the world.
