Chak De! India (2007)
Chak De! India (Let’s Go! India) is not your typical Hindi film. There are no splashy musical numbers and no happily ever after romances. This is a hard and realistic look at the role of women and prejudice (both religious and gender based) in modern India.
Based on a true story, this award winning film follows the trials of Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan), who captained the Indian team that lost the Men’s World Hockey Championship to Pakistan. Branded a traitor because of his Moslem faith, Kabir is driven from the sport, only to return several years later to coach the widely disregarded Women’s Hockey team made up of the top 16 national players from all over the country - some of whom don’t speak the same language or despise one another for their racial backgrounds.
Like India itself, this team reflects much of what is wrong in the world today, and ultimately, shows us the best of what is right, even when the truth hurts. That said, it is also one of the most delightful, heartwarming, feel-good movies to come out this year.
