Aachi And Ssipak (Korean animated movie)

A top-tier technical achievement in 2-D animation, “Aachi & Ssipak” is torpedoed by a story requiring auds to watch exceedingly grotesque characters slug it out in a future world in which human feces is the currency. Seven years in the making before it tanked locally, this sporadically amusing item appears to have nowhere else to go beyond selected fests and limited ancillary markets.

Pic plays just about all its laugh-if-you-dare cards in the first few minutes. Setting is Shit City, which runs on excrement. Reward for productivity is an addictive hallucinogenic frozen treat that stimulates even greater bowel movements. Title duo are unappealing hoods who hook up with a porn star and fall foul of vicious outcasts known as the Diaper Gang. Story grows increasingly nasty amid the wholesale slaughter to gain control of the city. Frantically paced film is virtually nothing but spectacular set pieces, and does have some funny TV commercial inserts, but offers far too little to engage senses other than the visual. Outstanding tech package includes extraordinarily well-detailed backgrounds and a lively score alternating between hard rock and techno beats.
