Bandit Queen (India/UK) (1994)

She was the most feared outlaw in India. If this story wasn’t true, you wouldn’t believe it…
“Bandit Queen” is a powerful portrayal of a real-life, modern day outlaw, Phoolan Devi (“Goddess of Flowers”). The movie opens at the point at which the 11 year-old Phoolan is sold as a bride to a middle-aged man. The marital rape and abuse that follow drives her to leave him and eventually, as an outcast, she falls into a life of brigandage. The movie does not portray the heroine as just another “wronged woman” but as one with deep psychological problems. Over time, she grows from merely enraged and disturbed to violent and vicious as she learns that she now has the power to inflict pain as well. After a long stint in prison, the real-life Phoolan Devi went on to marry above her caste and became the first Untouchable to serve in the Indian Parliament, but how she got there is a truly incredible story.
