Synopsis / Plot

Born and raised in a rural town, Choon-sam lives a relatively normal life, taking care of his father. When the village chief passes away through an accident, the villagers unanimously decide that young Choon-sam should be perfect to fit in the job. Choon-sam soon has to deal with adversity as his old friend and school election rival Dae-gyu becomes the county magistrate. This anticipated rivalry has them fight desperately for not only predominance, but also for pride.

The Big Scene is the latest film from Korean director Jang Jin, best known for the abstract gangster comedy Guns and Talks, in which he attempted to present a new spin on the usual hitman movie formula. Here, Jin does the same, trying to reinvigorate the traditional detective thriller by working in the cynical theme of modern society’s obsession with the media and by infusing the film with a decidedly offbeat sense of humour. This in itself is nothing new, as many action film makers have chosen to work in social commentary through a critical presentation of the media, as seen most recently in Johnnie To’s Breaking News. However, Jin’s film takes a different, slightly more satirical route, adopting the narrative format of television crime drama in a cinematic manner in an effort to produce something fresh and inventive.

The film begins in familiar fashion, with the discovery of a woman’s body in a hotel room, apparently stabbed to death. The police already have the prime suspect in custody, Kim Young Hoon (the ever twitchy Shin Ha Kyun, Save the Green Planet) who was spotted visiting the victim earlier in the evening. The police investigation, led by prosecutor Choi Yeon Hee (Cha Seung Won, Ghost House) takes place in a special custom built office where every aspect of the case can be filmed for a television program. Synopsis / Plot / Review

Sayonara Color is the fifth film by TAKENAKA Naoto, one of Japan’s most respected character actors and the director of Muno no Hlto - Nowhere Man and Tokyo Bivori. Shohei(TAKENAKA Naoto) works as a doctor in a sea-side hospital. One day a new patient is admitted to the hospital with ovarian cancer. Shohei is surprised to recognize Michiko(HARADA Toniovo}, his first love from high school. Shohei has been leading a dissolute bachelor life, paying for the company of high school girls and dating an older woman who works in a local bar, but in reality for the last twenty years he has not forgotten Michiko. Unfortunately, though Michiko doesn’t remember him at all.

Shohei becomes more and more and more persistent in his attempts to get her to recall their past. At first she is annoyed by his overtures, hut gradually warms to the doctor. Under Shohei’s kind and patient care Michiko’s condition jmproves and her cancer becomes operable. The operation is a success, but now Shohei himself learns that he has terminal cancer.

Synopsis / Plot

A nine-year old monk, Do-nyum, has lived most of his lonely life in a quiet mountain monastery under his elderly master. Though put under a strict regimen of Buddhist teachings, meditation and chores, the child cannot help but to think of his mother, whom he cannot remember but misses dearly and hopes to be reunited with one day. He also wishes that he could be like the other children who live nearby and play games and attend school. Do-nyum’s other companion is an older monk named Jung-sim, who is also struggling with staying on the path of enlightenment. The temple’s groundskeeper keeps reassuring Do-Nyum that his mother will come back someday. But Do-nyum, sick of waiting for a mother who may never return, agrees to be adopted by the monastery’s benefactor, a wealthy widow who visits the temple every year to mourn her late son.
