Plot:
Inspired by true events, THE CHILDREN OF HUANG SHI is a portrayal both sweeping and intimate of people who, thrown into an unexpected and desperate situation, discover their capacity for love and responsibility. It tells how a young Englishman, George Hogg came to lead sixty orphaned boys on an extraordinary journey of almost a thousand perilous miles across the snow-bound Liu Pan Shan mountains to safety on the edge of the Mongolian desert. And of how, in doing so, he came to understand the true meaning of courage. During his journey, Hogg learns to rely on the support of Chen, the leader of a Chinese partisan group who becomes his closest friend. He soon finds himself falling in love with Lee, a recklessly brave Australian adventurer whom war has turned into an unsentimental nurse on horseback. Along the way Hogg befriends Madame Wang, an aristocratic survivor who has also been displaced by war, who helps the young Englishman, his friends and their sixty war orphans make their way across awesome (and rarely filmed) mountain and desert regions to a place of safety near the western end of the Great Wall of China.

“Puzzle”, which marks the debut of short film director Kim Tae Kyung is interesting for a number of reasons, not least of which is the fact that the production completely eschewed any kind of publicity, with a secretive shoot which kept the plot under wraps. Unfortunately this move, presumably designed to make some kind of statement about the massive amounts regularly spent on complex advertising campaigns in the modern Korean film industry, not only didn’t pay off, but also failed to intrigue the public enough to translate into box office takings. This should definitely not be taken as a reflection upon the quality of the film itself, as “Puzzle†is an entertaining, slickly made mystery thriller that deserves to find an audience, arguably more so than some of the rather bloated productions which rack up success solely as a result of their marketing muscle.
The film begins at full tilt, with a man being shot and burned by an unseen assailant in an abandoned factory, before rushing into a wonderfully efficient bank heist in which two robbers make off with a safety deposit box. The thieves, along with two other members of their gang arrive at the factory, only to be confronted by the sight of the corpse, which just happens to be that of another collaborator. Their plans thrown into turmoil, the men start to argue amongst themselves, with the details behind the robbery emerging in flashbacks, including the key facts that they are all complete strangers and that none of them actually know who they are working for, having been lured into the scheme by an unseen mastermind. Needless to say, the stress begins to show as they try to figure out what to do, and as the skeletons start to tumble from the closets, betrayal and violence inevitably ensue.

Korea and Denmark had shared four Olympic titles for women’s handball from 1988 to 2000, with the Danes winning the latter two. The two dueling teams met again as finalists in 2004, and the pulsating game continued long and hard with a tie score leading to two killer overtimes and a penalty throw showdown.
Korea lost, but won what many call a silver medal that shines more brightly than the gold. At the time, Korean women’s handball was at its worst state ever, and players who should have been retired joined the national team to face the indefatigable Denmark. Plot:
A matchstick girl who was frozen after death 200 years ago (for failing to sell any matchsticks), becomes reborn in this movie which pays homage to computer games. Working at a Chinese restaurant, Ju (played by Kim Hyeonseong) is a game maniac who suffers from unrequited love with Hui-mi (Im Eungkyeong), who works part-time at a game room next door. One day, he meets a little matchstick girl of the same countenance as Hui-mi, and buys from her a gas lighter where he finds a phone number.
When he calls the number, he comes upon the question: “Will you please log in the game ‘Resurrection of the Little Match Girl?’” From that time on, Ju enters into the world of virtual reality with a view to save the girl and win her love, which is by no means an easy job. He has to fight against gangsters, secret agents, and commandos, sometimes with the help of a lesbian warrior named Lara (modeled after Lara Croft in “Tomb Raider”.
His final destination is the heart of the central computer operation system which gets rid of anyone who attains access to it. Indefatigable, Ju finally encounters an Orwellian “Big Brother” type boss who controls the whole computer system. The Matrix-like movie adroitly mixes the state-of-the-art techno game with Buddhist references, by sometimes presenting portions of Buddhist texts and mantra-like music.
