Simply Actors (2007) (Chinese)
Man Long Chan (Jim Chim), a constable whose antics and showmanship win him best performance awards at the Force’s annual parties, is handpicked by the Deputy Police Commissioner to enroll incognito into a Performance Arts Academy as an experiment in upgrading police acting abilities. Man Long is thrilled that his lifelong acting dreams are finally going to be realized, but quickly finds out that his plain looks and exaggerated performance skills are no match to his younger and better looking classmates. His only good friend in class is a fellow mid-term new student Dani (Charlene Choi), whose claim to fame is starring in a string of skin flicks, but is an aspiring actress with a heart of gold. Man Long’s confidence plunges into a downward spiral when he fails in a police operation and nearly loses his life. Then a favor he extends to Dani turns into an outright expulsion from the academy. In his darkest moments he meets a stage janitor (Anthony Wong) whose priceless insights into acting teaches Man Long that the Bard was right in saying that all the world is a stage, and all the men and women are simply actors. We slip in and out of different roles in our everyday lives and the best acting can be cultivated when you pay attention to what you do every second of everyday. In the end, Man Long returns to the Force with a renewed understanding of what it takes to be a good actor. He transplants his newfound knowledge into the future generation of undercovers whose lives will be spared because of Man Long’s acting classes.

Produced by Andrew Lau of Infernal Affairs fame, The Third Eye originally premiered at the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival, and features a promising young cast, including Race Wong (of girl group 2R, and Oxide Pang’s Ab-normal Beauty), Wong Yau Nam (of Fruit Chan’s Hollywood Hong Kong), and Derek Tsang (AV, Isabella). Director Carol Lai (Glass Tears, Floating Landscape) helms this voyeuristic and bloody thriller, examining a group of damaged souls who find themselves participants in a deadly game at a rundown motel located in rural Tai O. The motel looks like your typical seedy establishment for secret trysts and surprise rendezvous; among the temporary inhabitants are a drug smuggler, a menacing cop, and other suspicious folk who may or not be sinners. What these people don’t know is that someone is watching them, perhaps through peepholes, or through the motel’s many hidden cameras, which deliver the most private and incriminating moments of each guest to an attentive voyeur - who may ultimately have murder on his mind.

Arriving late at the appointed restaurant, Kanda says Ayumi is getting married and chides Miyata over not finding a new girlfriend. He then spontaneously invites a solitary diner, Maki, to join them. Although she is silently vowing to be alone because of bitterness over her engagement being broken just the day before, she quickly agrees. Kanda makes a sudden exit, leaving his friend to contend with the despondent and homeless girl. The two return to his apartment, but as Ayumi appears wanting some of her things she left behind, Maki says she must leave. Meanwhile, Miyata remains oblivious to the fact that both Kanda and Ayumi are being threatened by Asai, a Yakusa mob boss, and his mob over the disappearance of the “money” from Asai’s safe.
