Romance of The Three Kingdoms (Chinese) 1995

August 8, 2007 · Posted in Action, Adventure, Chinese Movies, Drama, Historical, Tv Drama | Share

Plot

In an age of turmoil, heroes will rise. . . It is the end of the 2nd Century and China is in a state of turmoil. The land is divided by warlords and the country is facing famine, droughts, and invasion from bordering tribes. On top of the problems the country is facing, Zhang Jiao and his brothers begin to rebel against the Han, while advocating the arrival of a new era, the era of the “Yellow Dragon,” implying that if people followed him, they would lead prosperous lives. Thousands of desperate villagers flocked to follow Zhang Jiao as they raided government offices and plundered towns and villages alike in protest of heavy taxation, wearing only a “yellow turban” on their heads. As their strengths and numbers grew, the “Yellow Turbans” overthrew some of the Imperial Court’s best generals and strongest forces. Concerned for their capital in Luo Yang and for the Han empire, the Imperial Court immediately constructed an “alliance” by requesting volunteers across the country to settle the rebellion. Three distinct generals were recruited – Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Jian. Together with their own officers, the Yellow Turban rebellion was quickly laid to rest and each of the men involved immediately gained popularity and power with the people. As their powers grew, however, each continued to seek more control of their territories and to unite all of China under one rule. One fought for hegemony. One fought for ambition. One fought for righteousness. Veteran officers and generals who shared the same visions swarmed under each leader. These stalwart souls waged war across the vast expanse of the land and, like blood thirsty demons, cut down any and all that stood in their way. Thus, the romance of the Three Kingdoms begins . .

In 1995, CCTV produced a television adaptation of the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It was a 84-part series with 44-minute long episodes.

The whole series took a 1000-strong production group four years to complete, and recruited over 400,000 civilian participants, including divisions of the PLA. Most of the dialogues used were adapted directly from the novel and extensive battle scenes were live-acted to a breathtaking scale. It was CCTV’s most expensive television series to date.

Tales from Earthsea (2006) (Japanese)

August 8, 2007 · Posted in Adventure, Animation, Anime, Drama | Share

Enter a dark, magical world of dragons and sorcery in Studio Ghibli’s blockbuster animated epic Tales from Earthsea. Adapted from Ursula K. Le Guin’s beloved children’s fantasy book series, Tales from Earthsea marks the phenomenal directorial debut of Miyazaki Goro, the son of the legendary Miyazaki Hayao. Complex and compelling, Tales from Earthsea presents a sweeping, fantastical story about a young prince’s journey through darkness and redemption.
A mysterious force is disturbing the natural balance in the land of Earthsea. Dragons are feuding, magic is dying, and the whole of humanity is falling into chaos. Haunted by inner demons, Prince Arren (voiced by Okada Junichi) stabs his father and runs away with the king’s sword. He finds friendship and protection with kind-hearted master wizard Ged and a strange young girl named Therru. A shadow, however, continues to haunt Arren, drawing him to the evil sorcerer Cob whose quest for immortality is destroying the balance between the realm of the living and dead. To save Earthsea, Arren must stop Cob, but he himself is falling into darkness.

More overtly dark in theme than previous Ghibli works, Tales from Earthsea is certainly equally amazing in terms of animation and design. Grand castles, medieval towns, stretching deserts, raging oceans, and idyllic countrysides vibrantly come alive on screen in rich strokes and seas of aqua and crimson. The release of a Studio Ghibli film is always a big event in Japan, and Tales of Earthsea was no exception. The film topped the box office for four weeks and earned over $60 million overall, proving that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

The Show Must Go On (2007) (Korean)

August 8, 2007 · Posted in Comedy, Korean Movies | Share

For Song Kang Ho, The Show Must Go On as he takes on his first leading role after his award-winning performance in record-breaking blockbuster The Host. The versatile actor again takes on the role of a concerned father, but this time he also happens to be a gangster. In his first gangster role since 1997′s No. 3, Song Kang Ho is as impressive as ever, convincingly balancing his character’s tired, laconic nature with the emotionally escalating plot. A gangster melodrama with unflinching violence and uncommon depth, The Show Must Go On packs a hard punch with its witty dialogue, raw emotions, and wrenching narrative. At the helm is Han Jae Rim, who previously wrote and directed Rules of Dating.

Kang In Gu (Song Kang Ho) just wants the best for his family, working hard to support the household and save money for a house. Slightly harried in a dark business suit, he looks like yet another anonymous middle-aged salaryman as he sets out for work every morning from his housing estate apartment. But In Gu’s line of work is bloody and messy. As a mid-ranking gang leader, he tries to balance work and family, but things aren’t going too well. His wife (Park Ji Young) and rebellious teenage daughter (Kim So Eun) are not happy about his job and, at times, embarrassingly rough demeanor. Meanwhile, a dangerous power struggle is brewing in the organization, and In Gu is caught in the middle of it all.

Time (Korean) 2006

August 5, 2007 · Posted in Drama, Korean Movies, Romance | Share

Plot

To save her relationship, a woman puts herself through extensive plastic surgery.

Prolific author and enfant terrible of Korean cinema Kim Ki-duk plumbs the depths of obsessive love in Time. Kim plays with the craze for plastic surgery that has invaded our lives, as magazines and television shows such as “Extreme Makeover” have streamed together into a nightmare of eternal youth and beauty. Kim’s unpredictable genius takes a fashionable issue to extremes in order to probe the dark, jealous core of a relationship gone wrong.

Attractive Seh-hee (Park Ji-yun) is having problems with her boyfriend, Ji-woo (Ha Jung-woo). After two years, their love has entered a period of weariness. Though faithful to his fiance, Ji-woo eyes other women and, in bed, seems to get excited only at the thought of making love to other partners. Seh-hee can’t cope with the mounting jealousy tainting her life and decides to dramatically change her look – to become a new woman, with whom her boyfriend can again fall in love.

She enters a plastic-surgery clinic and then vanishes for six months – long enough for the scars to heal – leaving Ji-woo hurt and confused by her disappearance. Resurfacing as the new waitress at the coffee shop Ji-woo frequents, Seh-hee – now calling herself See-hee (Sung Hyun-ah) – tries to seduce him. But between them stands the spectre of Ji-woo’s lost girlfriend, with whom he is still very much in love. Jealousy once again creeps into the shaky existence Seh-hee has artificially crafted.

A clean style guides the circular syntax of this extreme tale of love. Set mostly in coffee shops and bars, where the intimacy of a lovers’ discourse is shared by curious clients, Time is steeped in a quiet, disturbing violence that censors feelings and mutilates the soul through body surgery. As if trapped within a meandering, irrational mind, the script follows a complex rhythm that mirrors the obsessive tone of the film and displays once again Kim’s talent for transforming high-concept ideas into incandescent cinema.
