In 1987, Tsui Hark continued his reinvention of Hong Kong cinema with this collaboration with Ching Siu-tung. A Chinese Ghost Story is a remake of Li Han-shiang’s Enchanting Shadow (itself an adaptation of writer Pu Song-ling’s The Magic Sword); a story of a restless ‘fox spirit’ Nieh Hsiao-tsing (Joey Wong) who falls in love with her mortal victim Ning Tsai-shen (Leslie Cheung).
This hapless tax collector wanders into town on collecting duty but as the rain has ruined his record book he is unable to collect anything. With no money he is forced to seek shelter at the Lan Yeuk temple unaware of the fact that it is haunted. Later that night Tsai-shen meets Hsiao-tsing, who instead of snaring him for her master/mistress, a transsexual Tree Demon (referred to as the “Old Dame†in the HKL subtitles), she falls for Tsai-shen and a romance ensues. Tsai-shen vows to save her from the Tree Demon, as well as free her from her obligation to marry the evil Lord of the Dark Mountain with help from the Taoist swordsman Yen (Wu Ma).

A Chinese Ghost Story II (1990)
This sequel to the ground-breaking Chinese Ghost Story is good fun, if not entirely necessary. After losing Sian (Joey Wong) in the first film, Ning (Leslie Cheung) bumps into dead ringer Windy (also Joey Wong), who’s trying to save her dad (Lau Siu-Ming) from evil government bastards.
Plot devices occur when Windy and her compatriots believe Ning to be a wise elder; Ning plays along to discover just why Windy looks exactly like his departed ghost love. Jacky Cheung appears as Autumn, a Taoist monk who aids Ning, and the amazingly beautiful Michelle Reis is Moon, Windy’s sister. Waise Lee manages to luck into a great role as the military general chasing Windy and company.
Overall this is an entertaining flick that provides the same type of action, comedy and romance that made the first film so popular. As such, it isn’t as good, mostly because it can’t mach the first film’s originality or ability to surprise. Still, it’s worth checking out for those who dig this sort of thing. Joey Wong isn’t a ghost in this film, so the title must be referring to the rotted corpses that attack them along the way.

Ji-hae and Soo-kyoung are friends attending the same university and both have a crush on Sang-min who is in their drama club. Joon-ha is visiting his uncle’s home in the countryside during his summer vacation. There he meets Joo-hee and falls in love at first sight. One day, the lovely Joo-hee secretly asks Joon-ha to escort her to a haunted house in the village. Happy and excited to be at her service, Joon-ha meets her at their promised spot. But in an unexpected storm, the two lose their boat and barely manage to return home at a very late hour. Joo-hee gets into big trouble for this incident and is sent back to Seoul. Having parted with Joo-hee without a word of farewell, Joon-ha spends the rest of the summer heavy-hearted.
With summer vacation being over Joon-ha also returns to Seoul. At school, his classmate Tae-su asks him to write a love letter to send to a girl. And who would it be but Joo-hee, Joon-ha’s dream girl. Unable to confess his own summer love story, Joon-ha reluctantly complies with his friend’s request.
