The World of Silence (2006) (Korean)

Up-and-coming director Jo Eui Seok, who made a strong impression five years ago with debut feature Make It Big, breaks his silence with his sophomore film, the crime thriller World of Silence. Beautifully shot and tightly told, the suspenseful story pulls the viewer into a dangerous mind game between the police and a serial murderer. Lead Kim Sang Kyung is no stranger to crime drama, having portrayed a detective in the acclaimed Memories of Murder, but this time his mysterious character falls on the other side of the case. Park Yong Woo, fresh off the success of My Scary Girl, stars as a police officer who must race against the clock to save a young girl’s life. The tense chemistry between the two men drives the film as the plot builds up to its gripping conclusion.
When three young girls from the same orphanage turn up dead, weathered detective Kim (Park Yong Woo) realizes he has a serial murder case in his hands. One of the suspects on his list is Ryu Jung Ho (Kim Sang Kyung), a troubled photographer who has the mysterious ability to read minds. Having just returned to Korea from the US, Jung Ho becomes the guardian to a young girl, Su Yeon (Han Bo Hae), whose mother is in a coma. Is Jung Ho protecting the girl, or is she the next potential victim? As Kim digs deeper into the case, the situation reaches a crisis point when Su Yeon goes missing.

The Old Garden (2007) (Korean)

Undoubtedly one of the most interesting filmmakers working in Korea today, Lim Sang Soo has never shirked from pushing buttons and challenging conventions. His previous film, the controversial The President’s Last Bang about the 1979 assassination of Park Chung Hee, experienced brushes with the censors, whereas his third film, A Good Lawyer’s Wife, provided a devastatingly honest look at modern marriage. Based on Hwang Suk Yeong’s bestselling novel, Lim’s latest film The Old Garden, set in the politically turbulent 1980s and a comparatively mundane present, completes his portrait of changes in Korean society over the last 30 years.
The Old Garden revolves around an activist played by popular actor Ji Jin Hee (Perhaps Love), backdropped by the Kwangju Uprising of 1980, a large-scale democracy protest that was brutally suppressed by the Chun Doo Hwan military regime. Despite the sensitive set-up, the political tones underlie rather than drive the story, as the film very much focuses on the human aspects in its portrayal of two young people who are brought together and torn apart by the times. Placing equal emphasis on the female character, a schoolteacher played by Yeum Jung Ah (A Tale of Two Sisters), Lim also gives voice to the thoughts and experiences of the modern woman.
After 17 years of imprisonment, democracy activist Hyun Woo (Ji Jin Hee) is released from prison, but what awaits him is an unfamiliar world. He feels lost and displaced in a Korea that has gone through a myriad of changes in the last two decades. His former comrades are now salarymen, and all he went through in the past seems to be for nought. Learning that his love Yoon Hee (Yeon Jung Ah) has passed away, Hyun Woo returns to the countryside where they met, and revisits the past through her diaries and letters. During the tumultuous 80s, the young Hyun Woo found romance and refuge with Yoon Hee, and 17 years later, the memory of her love again provides a guiding light.

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai stars as Yan, a police mole in the triads for the past ten years. He’s been deep, deep undercover for so long that he’s started to question his focus and sanity. Meanwhile, he has a mirror opposite on the other side. Andy Lau is Ming, a rising cop who’s secretly a triad mole. For the same ten years, he’s been feeding information to Sam (Eric Tsang), a ruthless triad kingpin who Yan currently works for. Sam’s archenemy is Organized Crime and Triad Bureau Inspector Wong (Anthony Wong), who’s Yan’s only link to the police force. On a routine drug bust, both sides discover the presence of a mole within their ranks, and both sides charge their respective undercover with finding the offending party. However, Ming’s exact loyalties are not entirely clear, which may mean problems for both Sam and Inspector Wong. Meanwhile, Yan tries not to be killed by either side….

The film starts back in 1991. Officer Wong (Anthony Wong) is still busting triads, but his eventual nemesis Sam (Eric Tsang) is still a lowly sub-boss. Sam is beneath the powerful Ngai family, but the family gets thrown into disarray when the head of the family (Joe Cheung) gets murdered. The hitman is no stranger to the audience: Ming, played in IA1 by Andy Lau, and here as a youngun by Edison Chen. Ming did the deed at the behest of Sam’s wife Mary (Carina Lau), who takes the young guy under her wing. Meanwhile, Officer Wong and Sam actually share a minor friendship, as Wong views Sam as the lesser of the triad evils. But the hit on the elder Ngai means a power struggle could ensuea possibility that’s crushed by the quick ascent of the eldest Ngai son, Hau (Francis Ng), to the top seat in the triad. Hau takes the seat, brings the other bosses in line, and presto: the OCTB has a top nemesis for years to come.
Enter young Yan (Tony Leung in IA1, Shawn Yu in younger form). A rising cadet, he gets summarily dismissed because he’s actually the half-brother of Hau. This leads to his enlistment as an undercover (outlined in the first film), and his eventual employment for the Ngai family. The problem exists: who will he be loyal to, family or the cops? His contacts in the law include Officer Wong and Officer Luk (Hu Jun), whose morality and righteous determination are an inspiration to both Yan and Officer Wong. Wong could actually use the inspiration, because he’s not as righteous as IA1 would have us believe. He actually has secret ties to Mary, which are unknown to Sam and potentially damaging to Wong. Furthermore, Hau is more cunning and dangerous than he appears, which could prove potentially damning to Sam, who still seems somewhat naive for an avowed crime boss. Plus Ming continues to lurk in the background, slowly rising up the police ranks, quietly collecting information, and secretly coveting the older Mary. Something’s gotta give, and though the outcome is known (see IA1 to get the final scoop), the road it takes to get there holds some surprises of its own.

Fly High (Saranghanikka goenchanha) (korean movie)

It is school festival day and Min-hyuk is busy dancing and singing. However, it is not the stage but a toilet that binds his destiny. He is bewitched by a daring high school girl, Mi-hyun, who comes into the mens room because the womens room is full. From that day on, Min-hyuk woos her, escorts her home at night, stuffs her locker with roses, and clears passages for her in the morning after a snow fall. For all his efforts, he does not get much more than a tender glance from Mi-hyun. When she suddenly vanishes, sorry are the only words she leaves behind.
If theres anyone who knows something about melodrama, its certainly Director Kwak Ji Kyun. Starting his career as assistant director for famous names like Im Kwon Taek and Bae Chang Ho, Kwak made a splash with his debut film The Winter Wanderer in 1986, starring Ahn Sung Ki and Lee Mi Sook. Then for 20 years it was continued re-interpretation and re-discovery of the theme of love. Be it his fantastic 1990 film Portrait of Our Youth or the controversial 2000 film Plum Blossom with Kim Rae Won and Bae Du Na, Kwak always manages to tell interesting stories.
Written by Kim Eun Sook (Lovers in Paris and Lovers in Prague), Kwak Ji Kyuns first happy melodrama Fly High spotlights two young students entangled in a peculiar relationship. Min Hyeok (Ji Hyun Woo of Golden Apple and Over The Rainbow) is a handsome and talented singer and dancer. One day he meets a young student named Min Hyeon (Im Jung Eun from Stairway of Clouds) who introduces herself to a smitten Min Hyeok, saying Hi, Im leaving tomorrow. Sorry! Thats where their relationship seems to end, but after two years that beautiful smile returns to Min Hyeoks life once more, completely out of the blue. An ill Min Hyeon makes him a strange proposal, starting a very intense, possibly very short love story.

The Quiet Family (1998) (Korean)

BLOODY humour, omens of doom, family lunacy, and a trail of dead bodies are the essential components in this campy Korean black comedy set to the frantic pace of rockabilly and other poppy American tunes.
The apparently innocuous Kang family reside in Misty Lodge housing guests, cleaning, cooking, and maintaining a simple way of life. That is until they find the dead body in room 203.
What happens next is absurdly comical, as father, uncle and son frantically dispose of the corpse in the woods. This hasty act foreshadows the bloody fate of each subsequent lodger that checks in. The humour lies in the inadvertent circumstances surrounding each death. At first they are accidental. But as the body count rises there seems to be no limit to what the family will do to avoid being found out.
“The Quiet Family” is comically brilliant. It is also a ruthless presentation of the selfishness of human nature. The dynamic of the family proves to be nothing more than a larger manifestation of this.
Set in a context particular to Korean culture, director Kim Ji- Woon’s message remains universal. He leaves understatement at the wayside, allowing us to laugh whole-heartedly at the family’s farcical attempts to keep everything together when life is unravelling at the seams.
