The Foul King (Korean)

Shy banker Im Dae-Ho (Song Kang-Ho) perfectly embodies the average adult close to a mid-life crisis. His boss (Song Young-Chang) is a maniacal control freak who uses the “law of the jungle” to deal with employees. The fittest survive, the others are welcome to crumble at the hands of his devastating headlock. Dae-Ho’s performance rating is the lowest in the company, and he’s constantly late to work. His personal life is not much different: Dae-Ho is in his late twenties and without a partner. Even worse, his father (Christmas in August’s Shin Koo) always scolds him like he’s dealing with a ten year old kid. Dae-Ho doesn’t want to grow up, as he still has the naiveté and spontaneity of his teenage years. But he’s also suffering the pressure of his job’s highly competitive nature - and by extension the pressure of modern society. And, he secretly loves one of his colleagues, but he can never find enough courage to confess to her.
One windy evening, Dae-Ho spots a physical training center on his way home. The center promises techniques that can be applied to everyday life. Is this the answer to his problems? Professional wrestling? At first he’s just curious, asking the owner if he can teach him how to escape a headlock. But, as the days pass, he becomes infatuated with the profession. He has finally found an escape valve where he can vent his frustrations, and more importantly achieve something positive. Whether or not that will help with his initial needs doesn’t matter. He’s become self-confident, and he finally has something to be proud of.
The Foul King is a simple black comedy with plenty of laughs and silly situations. But, at the heart of the film lies an intelligent recreation of everyday men’s problems. The maturity and realism used by director Kim Ji-Woon in depicting Dae-Ho’s hurdles is impressive. The film’s ending seems to imply that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. However, the film still conveys a serious statement, that determination is what will make you achieve your goals. What matters is not if one achieves success at the end, but how he fares getting there. That message may be a predictable one, but the film delivers it honestly. . .

Libera Me (2000) (Korean)

Story: After twelve years since he has been put into prison, Hee-Soo is released. Soon after he is emancipated, the boiler room of the prison explodes and the entire building is engulfed in a scorching inferno. Following the days after Hee-Soo is released, the team members of 85th station face numerous well-planned fires, while attempting to cope with
losses and finding the culprit behind the chaos.
Review: Fire. It’s got the power of life, destruction, and now…entertainment! Following in the footsteps of such fire blockbusters as Ron Howard’s “Backdraft”, Libera Me does an excellent job of creating a captivating movie-watching experience. Right from the beginning where you see a pipe releasing steam and sucking it back in all to having it explode in some guy’s face, this movie grabs you and just doesn’t let you go. From
that moment on, this movie is nearly constant action with the occasional dramatic segments.
Not only does the movie have wonderful eye candy, it even delves into the villain’s character as well. This guy was pure evil, but you actually get to see why he turned out like that. It’s no surprise that he ended up being such a bastard pyromaniac that he is. The thing is, this guy has this really “nice guy” side to him that takes care of kids and is like a mentor to them. It’s such a trip to see this guy go all psycho and later on burning the hell out of buildings and people. Such a crazy moment is when he sets these other kids that beat him up on fire, locks them in the room, and just starts smiling and giggling on the other side of the door.
A problem most of these types of movies have in common are the use of obvious CG. Libera Me uses real flames, and some of it is so outrageous you’d believe they were crafted with CG. But everything is real here, and so are the actors and actresses. Apparently they wanted to make this movie as believable as possible, which led them to do their own stunts and endure the raging flames without the use of stunt doubles. In conclusion, this movie will have you on the edge of your seat, and simply must be seen. Great acting, outrageous scenes of blazing carnage, and one twisted ass individual messing with the heroes makes this movie a must-see. Either way you look at it, Libera Me promises a good time chock full of action and shocking displays of pyrotechnics.
