Following the success of My Sassy Girl, Korean cinema scored another runaway hit in 2003 with My Tutor Friend. Based on an internet novel, the whimsical, over-the-top romantic comedy launched heartthrob Kwon Sang Woo (Stairway to Heaven) and small-screen starlet Kim Ha Neul (Romance) into instant movie stardom. The film also features a hilarious supporting performance from Gong Yoo (Spy Girl), who would go on to be a star in his own right. College student Choi Su Wan (Kim Ha Neul) is forced by her mother to take a tutoring job. But her student turns out to be Kim Ji Hoon (Kwon Sang Woo), an uncouth 21-year-old high school student with great fighting skills and serious authority issues. The spunky Su Wan, however, refuses to back down and ends up involved in Ji Hoon’s life in more ways than she expected. Amidst the fighting and bickering, Ji Hoon finds himself falling for Su Wan, but her heart seems to lie with someone else.

More overeager romantic comedy from the Korean cinema mill, 100 Days with Mr. Arrogant unfortunately does not match the magnificent heights of My Sassy Girl. Hell, it doesn’t even measure up to the very reachable heights of My Tutor Friend. To be even more blunt, the film is poorly developed, cloying, and damn near interminable. Teenage girls might get a kick out of cute male lead Kim Jae-Won, but the hyperactive antics of female lead Ha Ji-Won could induce seizures in even those with healthy nervous systems. All-in-all, this is one “based on an Internet novel” Korean comedy that deserves a pass.
Ha Ji-Won (Phone, Sex is Zero) is Ha-Young, a too-daffy high school senior who makes the egregious error of accidentally kicking a soda can while college student Hyung-Joon (Kim Jae-Won) is driving by in his Lexus. The can strikes him squarely in the noggin, drawing blood and causing him to slightly damage his expensive automobile. He’s rightfully pissed, but Ha-Young is poor. Since he can’t squeeze money from someone who has none, Hyung-Joon proffers a suspiciously sordid bargain.

Sometimes when you’re being derivative good things transpire, and that in itself can deliver a more shocking revelation than all the cheesy FX and predictable chillers put together.
This is what happens with The Diary, a foray once more into the Pang Brothers breech with their entourage of Thai filmmakers and knack for intelligent gore. After the disappointing Recycle set the prolific siblings back a bit, it’s pleasant to see them back in moderately satisfying form with a short yet titillating release timed nicely for the Halloween season.
On the surface, The Diary seems like it’s bound for also-ran perdition, hinting just a slight too much at working that tired old The Eye magic one time too many. Even its main star, Charlene Choi, puts on a spectacular Angelica Lee imitation to the point where at the onset of proceedings wary viewers will be tempted to give up and call it a write off.
Do not: perseverance here is a bona fide virtue, and The Diary has going for it more than meets, well, the eye. Ironically, those very fears of this effort descending into a realm of rip-off fiascoes save it from a fate worse than celluloid death. As soon as one thinks they’ve seen it before, which they have in many ways, The Diary comes charging through to twist those well-worn elements and throw our own jaded sights right back at us.
